Riverina Herald, August 2 1940
Mr Bernard Joseph Sweeney.
There passed away at “Cambray” Echuca, on Wednesday morning, an old and hugely respected resident of the Thyra district in the person of Mr. Bernard Joseph Sweeney, at the age of 73 years.
The late Mr. Sweeney was born at Linton, Ballarat, but had lived at Thyra for the past 23 years and interested himself in grazing. He was a regular attendant at the Roman Catholic Church, Mathoura. He was well known in the Riverina having been a contractor in those districts. The high esteem in which he was held in the district was evidenced yesterday afternoon when his funeral took place. After a brief service conducted by Rev, Father P. A. Stokes the cortege moved from St Mary's Church, Echuca, to the Moama Cemetery, where a large number of sympathising friends and relatives attended to pay their last respects.
The coffin, which was covered with wreaths and flowers, was borne to the grave by Messrs C. Leetham, C. Larcombe, A. Berryman, T. White, N. Scott and W. Pocklington.
Rev. Father G. O'Connor read the burial services, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by J. W. Vevers.
