Lionel St Clair Buck enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 31/8/1916. Next of kin was his father Mr Lionel Buck, 25 Commercial Road, South Yarra, Vic.
The Certificate of Medical Examination describes Lionel as: - 18 years and 8 months, height - 5 feet 2 and a half inches, weight - 137 pounds, chest measurement - 31/33 and a half inches, complexion - medium, eyes - blue, hair - brown and religious denomination - Church of England. His distinctive marks - Vacs - 3 left arm, scar - left forearm, 3 scars back right elbow and a mole below right breast.
He was sent to Fargo Hospital in England on 18/2/1917 sick.
Lionel fought in France. On the 13/6/1917 he was charged with Crime Disobedience of routine order no 712 prohibiting wearing of shorts. He was awarded 48 hours F P No 2
He was admitted to hospital with a G.S.W. to his knee and foot on 6/10/1917 and rejoined his unit on 29/12/1917. He was again admitted to hospital with a gunshot wound to his left thigh on 1/1/1918.
He had leave in Paris on 6/10/1918 and reported to a hospital sick on 26/101918 while on leave.
Lionel returned to Australia per “Anchisis” and was discharged on 22 Nov 1919. He received the British War, Star and Victory Medals.
On the 4th October 1966 Lionel signed a Statutory Declaration claiming :- That I have lost the Discharge 1914-1918, Medals and Returned Soldiers Badge.
The circumstances under which he lost them were: - I was in hospital for several years and in the meantime the property was sold where I was living and couldn’t recover my effects when I came out of hospital. Lionel’s address was 9 Arcacia Street, Elsternwick, Vic.
