Frederick Henry Buck enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 28/2/1916. His next of kin was his father Mr Charles E Buck, Francis Street, Bairnsdale.
On the Certificate of Medical Examination Frederick is described as: - 22 years, height - 5 feet 4 and a quarter inches, weight - 139 pounds, chest measurement - 33 and a half/36 inches, complexion - dark, eyes - grey, hair - black and religious denomination - Church of England. His distinctive marks were: - Vac 4 left arm, birthmark back neck, 1 mole chest, 1 mole abdomen and 1 mole left collar bone.
Frederick served in France. He was admitted to hospital on 13/1/1917 with Trench Feet and transferred to the Reading War Hospital in England. Frederick returned to his unit on 1/2/1918. He was next admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds to his arms and head on 20/5/1918 and rejoined his unit on 6/8/1918. Once again he was wounded, this time with severe gunshot wounds to his back on the 1/9/1918 and sent to England to recover.
He returned to Australia per “Delta” and embarked on 24/1/1919 and reached Melbourne on 10/3/1919 and discharged on 17/4/1919.
