The Hay Standard, Saturday, June 6, 1896.
DEATH OF MR. E. DAVIES. - We regret to have to announce the death of Mr. Edward Davies of the Council water works. Mr. Davies who has been ailing for some time, was recently compelled to take to his bed, but improved suffiently to get about again, but, about a fortnight ago he was taken seriously ill, and little or no hope was entertained of his recovery though at times a turn for the better took place, but though he received the most unremitting attention from Dr. Armstrong and his family he quietly passed away on Tuesday evening about six o’clock. Mr. Davies had been in the council’s employ for over five years having been appointed in October 1890, and during the whole of that time he had been a most conscientious and painstaking official and always gave the greatest satisfaction in the discharge of his duties and the greatest confidence was placed in him by the council. It may be said that he was a martyr to duty as he was never happy unless engaged in some work or other connected with the water works and it was while he was engaged in this way that he caught cold, which led to his death. During the time he was an engineer he carried out many important improvements at the water works which have been of great advantage, and in other ways he was the means of saving a great deal of money to the ratepayers. That he was a most efficient officer is fully acknowledged by the Council, and the public and we have no hesitation in saying that it will be difficult to find one to fill his place. The greatest sympathy is felt for his wife and family in the sad bereavement which has befell them. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon. The Major and Aldermen and a large number of the public attending. A beautiful wreath was sent by the Council with the words attached “With sympathy from the Mayor and Aldermen”. A number of pretty wreaths and crosses, were sent by friends, there being in all about a dozen.
