Ernest Westergaard enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 21/8/1916, his wife Gladys was his next of kin. On his certificate of Medical Examination Ernest is described as age - 23 years, height - 5 feet 7 and three quarter inches, chest measurement 35/38 and a half inches, complexion - fresh, eyes - brown, hair - brown and religious denomination - Church of England. His distinctive marks were 4 Vaccination Marks left arm. Ernest embarked on the “Argyllshire from Fremantle on 9/11/1916 and disembarked at Devonport on 10/1/1917. He was admitted to hospital with V.D. for 45 days . He contracted this in London from a prostitute. When he was discharged he was then sent to fight in France . He was reported missing in action on the 13/10/1917 and finally posted - Killed in action - in Belgium on 12/10/1917.
