MR JOHN SMITH
Death removed another old Stawellite on Friday night in the person of Mr John Smith of Napier St. He had not enjoyed good health for some time, and had been an inmate of the Stawell Hospital. He was a good, honest, hard working citizen, and his association with the town dates back over half a century. He was born in Barham, Lincolnshire, England, and had reached the age of 83 years, carrying on active operations at his calling as a marine dealer until a few weeks back. In the old days of Methodism he was one of the most faithful worshippers in that denomination, and throughout his life, he followed what he considered "the right path". His faithfulness at one time earned for him the sobriquet of "Perambulator John" and occasionally amongst the older generation this term was heard. The origination of the term arose in this way. Mr Smith and his wife never missed a meeting in the Methodist Church, and when their first child was born they were to be seen wheeling the child consistently to the church service or other meetings in the church, and his devotion won for him the nick-name "Perambulator John", and, like many other names not placed on the register it stuck. He played his little part well in the town's history and leaves behind a number of old friends. He was twice married, and is survived by a son and two daughters of the first union, and three sons and three daughters of the second. The members of the family are: - Mr George Smith (Ballarat), Mrs E Rickard (Stawell), Mrs A Booth (Stawell), Leslie, John, Eric, Rose, Eileen and Sylvia of Stawell. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, the mortal remains being interred in the Stawell Cemetery. Rev. G. H. Cleaveley read the burial service and the coffin bearers were: - Messrs E Rickard, W Rickard, J Anyen, W Gilbert, A Hamilton and R Booth. Messrs F Crouch and Son conducted the mortuary arrangements.
