John Roderick Hayes was born in Loch,Victoria on April 9 1915. He lived with his parents and sister,Frances Mary on the family farm at Loch.
In 1939 he moved to Melbourne working firstly for Electrolux and then for Commonwealth Aircraft at Fishermens Bend.
In 1942 he married Clarice Edith Smith. John Wallis Hayes,their eldest son was
born while they lived in Kew,Vic.
John (Jack) felt life in Melbourne wasn't for him and in 1945 he purchased a farm at Kongwak and commenced dairying.

John Roderick Hayes enlisted in the Australian Military Forces on 15/12/1938 for two years National Training. He is described as:- height - 5 feet 10 and a half inches, weight - 172 pounds, chest measurement - 35/40.

John married Clarice Edith (Edith) Smith, daughter of Romain Smith and Clarice Ethel Groube Wallis, on 17 Jan 1942 in Frankston, Victoria Australia. (Clarice Edith (Edith) Smith was born on 18 Jan 1920 in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria Australia.)
