Obituary:- 27th March, The Kyabram Free Press: -
Mr David Edis, one of the earliest settlers in this district, died at his home, Kyabram on Sunday shortly after mid-night. He had not enjoyed good health of late, and just before his death suffered from several complications.
On March 13 he performed the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new Methodist Church at Kyabram, though had he acted upon instruction of his medical advisor, he would have remained at his home that day. But Mr. Edis was determined to fulfill the engagement, and when the time arrived for him to proceed to the function he said he felt exceptionally well. The crisis however, came on Saturday night when relatives were informed that his condition was so serious that it seemed unlikely he could survive.
Mr. Edis who was 76 years of age at the time of his death, was always an active man, and in his day was a great athlete. He was a prominent cricketer, and on many occasions stooked his crop all night and rode off in the morning to play cricket or shoot, or take part in a pedestrian event at some district sports meeting.
He selected land through which the railway line was destined to run and for some years has lived in retirement. His principle recreation as a member of the Mechanics’ Institute was billiards, and almost every afternoon he used to spend a pleasant hour or so over the tables. He was a trustee of the Kyabram recreation reserve and the senior trustee of the Kyabram Methodist Church. Since the fund for the new Church was inaugurated he has made three generous donations. Mr. Edis who was thrice married left a family of three, Hannah (Mrs. Jones, Melbourne) David (Ariah Park) and Clara (Kyabram). A second son (Oswald) was killed at the war.
The funeral took place yesterday at Kyabram Cemetery. The cortege was a lengthy one. The Rev. W. J. Williams conducted the service at the graveside. Messrs G. H. Bishop and Co. had charge of the mortuary arrangements.
