  General Notes:

Electoral Roll: - 1936 - Mine Road, Korumburra, Vic - motor mechanic.

Ruby Stephens and Edward Jackson.
On the 18th of February 1933 Ruby Evelyn Stephens married Edward (Ted) Jackson at Korumburra.
Ted was one of six children. His father had worked at the Korumburra Coal Creek Mine as the Manager. He set the explosives to blow up the seams. One of the explosives didn't go off and he had to go in and check it out. He was killed in the subsequent explosion, leaving his wife to bring up the family on her own. The two older boys bought home their wages to help support the family.
His Grandfather had also been killed in the same mine. He had bought his three sons down from New South Wales to work in the mines.
Ted was an apprentice motor mechanic. The owner of the garage liked Ted so much he wanted to adopt him for his own as he didn't have any children. Ted’s Mother wasn't too impressed by this and didn't want to give her son up.
When Ted married Ruby in 1933, he was was running his own garage at Konwak and Ruby drove a car and did the mail round. Their only child Deone Jackson was born on the 13th March 1936. Ted gave up the garage and took over the mail run until the Second World War broke out.
Ted joined the Air Force and worked as a mechanic firstly at Sale and then in New Guinea. While Ted was away Ruby returned to the Stephens family farm and helped Les with the milking and general farm work.
When Ted returned home after the War, he got a job in a Garage at Korumburra. He wasn't particularly happy there, so after 18 months gave it up.
Ted and Ruby bought a mixed business at North Carlton and ran that for four years.
They sold the business and bought a house in Richmond with two huge Canary Island Date Palms in the front garden, one either side of the garden path. (One of the stories handed down was that Ruby’s brother Les sent her a letter and couldn’t remember the address, so wrote on the front of the envelope “The house with two Canaray Date Palms in the front yard” and it was delivered to her.)
Ruby always enjoyed gardening and their garden was beautifully kept with lots of lovely flowers and vegetables.
Ted got a job working for the State Electricity Commission as a foreman in charge of the fleet of cars. He supervised the repairs and maintenance.
Ruby and Ted had a caravan and boat at San Remo, which they stayed at regularly for holidays. Ted took an early retirement at 63 and they sold the house in Richmond and bought a house at San Remo. They stayed here for 16 years.
Deone had married for the second time and was living at Evans Heads in New South Wales. They would go up and spend the winter months with Deone and her husband John each year and help out in the mixed business they ran.
After sixteen years at San Remo they bought a Unit at the Coal Fields Caravan Park at Wonthaggi. They had a double block of land with the unit and still enjoyed their gardening.
Ted passed away from dementure at age 90 on the 7th August 1999 and is buried in the Korumburra Cemetery.
About four years later Ruby passed away on the 27th May 2003 and is buried with Ted.
