The Euroa Gazette, May 7 1918:- Mr George Sutherland "Lindon" Euroa, whose health had been causing his friend some anxiety of late, died on Sunday evening.
Born in Edinburgh 80 years ago he came to Victoria in 1857. After being with his brother-in-law Mr James Hay, hotel-keeping at Rushworth, for some years he took a hotel at Rushworth, for some years he took a hotel at Nagambie, and on leaving there became the manager of the Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda. In 1879 he came to Euroa and leased the Euroa Hotel from Mr O.L. De Boos. A few years later the hotel was destroyed by fire and deceased then bought the property and built the present hotel. He was instrumental in getting the National Bank built of similar design to the hotel, the same architects being employed. The late Mr Sutherland was one of the leading citizens of Euroa for many years. He was always to the fore in everything that had for the object the advancement of the town. He was one of the first members of the agricultural and horticultural societies and only vacated his seat on the former a few months ago, and was one of the foundation members of the Public Hall Co besides being the largest shareholder. For a number of years he was Government nominee on the Water Trust. The deceased gentleman was always prominent, both as an organiser and performer, in all local amateur entertainments, and he was a keen sport, being particularly fond of cricket, which he played until he got up in years, when he acted as umpire for all matches. Deceased re-married several years ago and a widow and a grown up family of four daughters and one son are left. The funeral will take place today.
