The name Weideling originated in Switzerland during the mediaeval period. During the Middle Ages scribes could only record names the way they sounded and this changed the way the name was spelled. Many variations occurred and included Weidenauer, Weidnauer, Wiednauer, Weitenauer, Weitenaver plus quite a number of others. Later in the 18th., and 19th. century many people of Swiss origin emigrated from their homeland to other European countries or the New World ( USA). After my recent trip to the USA I noted that many more people with the surname Weideling exist there than in Germany where to the best of my knowledge only one other person outside the family exists. I arrived in Australia in June 1961.
