Thomas Jacob Wood enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 28/2/1916. His father Richard Wood, 18 Berry Street, East Melbourne was next of kin. The address has been crossed out and 134 Bridge Street, Richmond written down. Thomas had been an apprentice engineer at Johnson & Sons, South Melbourne for seven years. He had completed his apprenticeship On the Certificate of Medical Examination Thomas is described as - 21 years and 7 months, height - 5 feet 6 and three quarter inches, weight - 156 pounds, chest measurement 33 and a half/36 inches, complexion - fair, eyes - hazel, hair - fair and religious denomination - Presbyterian. Thomas served in England with the field company engineers, Thomas was in King George Hospital on 28/8/1916 with diphtheria and was transferred to the isolation hospital. He was discharged on 13/10/1916. On the 13/8/1917 he was admitted to the New Zealand Hospital, Codford with injuries, a fracture of the left tibia, he was there for 4 months. Thomas was riding a motorbike while on duty and had an accident. The motor bike fell on his left leg. Thomas was A.W.L from 1600 14/3/1918 to 1600 15/3/1918. He was docked two days pay.
