Claude Cecil Johnson enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 10/12/1917. His next of kin was his wife Mrs Ivy R Johnson, 24 Geelong Road, Footscray, Victoria.
The Certificate of Medical Examination describes Claude as: - 32 years and 1 month, height - 5 feet 6 inches, weight - 158 pounds, chest measurement - 35/39 inches, complexion - fresh, eyes - blue, hair - fair and religious denomination - Presbyterian. His distinctive marks were - vacs 3 left arm.
Claude embarked from Melbourne on the "A38" and disembarked Southhampton on 13/2/1918. He served in England. On the 2/5/1918 at Halton Camp, Wendover, Claude was charged with "Falling out of Instuctional Class without permission at about 3.50 p.m. 25/4/1918. Award - 7 days C.C. with forfeiture of 2 days pay. By Major Brown"
He was appointed A/Cpl on 23/5/1918 at the A.F.C Training Depot. On the 11/7/1918 he was appointed E.D.P Cpl (A.F.C. Depot Haliffild Camp Bucks. On the 15/7/1918 he was On Command at N.C.O.S. School of disipline Chelsea . On the 6/9/1918 he was appointed A/Sergeant and on 24/10/1918 he was appointed Sergeant.
Claude returned to Australia per "Chemnitz" on 7/7/1919 and disembarked at Melbourne on 5/9/1919 and was discharged on 29/9/1919.
