The Lancefield Mercury. Thursday January 11th 1940. MR. JOHNSON HEMPHILL The death took place at his residence "The Pines" on Tuesday afternoon, of Mr. Johnson Hemphill, a member of one of the best-known families in the Lancefield and Romsey districts. His health had not been good for some months. Deceased carried on farming and grazing pursuits for over 50 years but, being of a very quiet disposition, did not take any active part in public affairs. He leaves a widow, two daughters and one son to mourn their loss. A report of the funeral and further particulars of deceased's life will appear in our next issue. The Lancefield Mercury. Thursday January 18th 1940. We referred in our last issue to the death of the late Mr. Johnson Hemphill, which took place at his residence "The Pines" on Tuesday, January 9th. The deceased gentleman was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. Hemphill, who were among the first pioneers of the Lancefield district. The family are among the best known and highly respected though out the district. Until recently Mr. Hemphill had enjoyed fairly good health. The funeral which took place at the Lancefield Cemetery on January 10th, was largely attended. Services at the house and at the graveside were conducted by Mr. Brierly and the Rev. F. Vickerman, a brother-in-law of the deceased. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. W. A. Gallpen.
