Alfred Henry Hunt

  General Notes:

In 1861 Alfred Henry HUNT, the second son of Alfred HUNT and Emma Knight BUTCHER was born in South Yarra. In 1867 the family moved to a property on Deep Creek adjoining that of Charles MUSTEY. Alfred Henry HUNT was a butcher for twelve years before taking up farming.
In 1887 he married Margaret MUSTEY at Lancefield. Their son Charles Alfred Henry HUNT was born in 1888 and sadly Margaret died soon after.
Alfred's sisters Harriet and Florence then lived with him for a number of years.
In 1906 Alfred married Amelia Farrow of Piper's Creek. Amelia died childless in 1939 and Alfred died in 1951.
Alfred was a member of Romsey and Melbourne Pastoral and Agricultural Societies. He was an expert horseman and the owner of Rys Harold, a pure bred pony stallion in the 1899-1906 era, winner of many awards at local and metropolitan shows and meetings.
Alfred was also a member of Manchester Unity Odd fellows Lodge and a Past Master of Romsey Masonic Lodge.
After his brother Thomas's wife died in 1919, Alfred and Amelia brought up their youngest nephew Ronald. Their property subsequently passed on to him.

One of the districts oldest and best known residents, Mr. Alfred Henry Hunt died at his residence in Main Road, Lancefield, on Thursday, 12th July, at the age of 90 years.
The late Mr. Hunt was born at South Yarra in 1861, and came with his parents to Lancefield four years later, They settled near Mustey’s Bridge, and the boy got his education at the local school. In the early eighties he opened a butchery in Lancefield and later was in partnership with the late Mr. Charles Mustey. Some years later he purchased the farm along the main road, which he worked until he retired a few years ago.
He was married twice. His first wife was Miss Margaret Mustey, and the second was Miss Amelia Farrow, of Piper’s Creek, who was a well known horsewoman. She predeceased him about ten years ago.
The late Mr. Hunt was a foundation member of the local branch of the Oldfellow’s Lodge, and was a prominent freemason; but he was best known for his knowledge of horses. He owned many good horses, especially trotters, including a famous trotting pony named Rhys Harold. He showed on numerous accasions and gained many trophies. He was recognized as an excellent judge of horses, and at one time he had his own veterinary surgeon. He was a member of the local Horticultural Society and acted on the committees. For over 50 years he was trustee of the Lancefield cemetery, and several times was Chairman of the Trust.
He leaves two sons, a sister and a brother.
The funeral at Lancefield cemetery on Saturday, 14th July, was largely attended. The coffin- bearers were Messrs. R. Hunt, S. Hunt, Allan Haslett and J. R. Hemphill. Pall-bearers were Messrs. L. Bennett, L. Ryan, W. Ryan, W. Mustey, W. Walker, W. Haslett and W. Barnes.
Services at the Church of England and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. R. J. McCall, Th.L.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. W. A. Gallpen.

Alfred married Margaret Mustey, daughter of Charles Mustey and Mary Dixon, on 15 Jun 1887 in Lancefield, Victoria Australia. (Margaret Mustey was born on 3 Dec 1867 in Lancefield, Victoria Australia, died on 5 May 1888 in Lancefield, Victoria Australia and was buried in Lancefield Cemetery, Victoria Australia.)

Alfred next married Amelia Farrow, daughter of John Farrow and Elizabeth Woodend, in 1906 in Victoria Australia. (Amelia Farrow was born in 1860 in Morrison, Victoria Australia, died on 28 May 1939 in Heidelberg, Melbourne, Victoria Australia and was buried on 30 May 1939 in Lancefield Cemetery, Victoria Australia.)
