Carlos Edward Minster enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 4 October 1915. His next of kin was his mother Mrs Ada Florence Minster, 70 Peel street, Ballarat. The Certificate of Medical Examination describes Carlos as: - 20 years and 4 months, height - 5 feet 6 inches, weight - 11 stone 1 pound, chest measurement - 33/35 inches, complexion - dark, eyes - brown, hair - dark and religious denomination - Church of England. His distinctive marks were: - appendix scar, small mole below the inner end of left clavicle. A Field Gen Court Martial was held on 19/6/1916. Carlos was charged with stealing money from a comrade in that he at the billet “In the Field” stole a twenty franc note from driver Brown between 2125 on 9/6/1916 and 0800 on 10/6/1916. The sentence - six months “Hard Labour” The sentence of 6 months hard labour commuted to 90 days F.P. No. 1. by order of G.O.C. Carlos was admitted to hospital with influenza on 17/7/1916 and returned to England to recover and was discharged back to his depot on 8/8/1916 He was again admitted to hospital on 28/7/1917, this time with scabies. He was wounded in action (gassed) on 21/ 6/1918 and was sent to England to recover. On 25/10/1918 he was admitted to hospital for a period of 88 days with V.D. Carlos returned to Australia per “Derbyshire” and was discharged on 14/6/1919. He received the Star, British War and Victory Medal.
