William Allan Stephens and Ruby Clare Logan
William Allan Stephens was born on the 30rd November 1922 in the Leongatha Hospital. He was only the second child in the family of ten children who was born in a hospital. The other eight except for Jack, who was born at the Hawthorn Hospital, were all born at home with a Midwife attending the birth.
William was always known as Allan and was the youngest child. He grew up on the family farm at Ruby and was expected to help out with the chores as soon as he was old enough. He attended the Ruby State School and when he was old enough to leave school helped his Father on the farm.
Allan was the good-looking one in the family; he had blue eyes and brown hair. He played cricket and tennis.
World War 2 broke out and Allan enlisted. On the 22 June 1944 Allan married Ruby Clare Logan at the Methodist Church, Korumburra. Allan had five days leave from the Army for the marriage and honeymoon.
Ruby was born at Leongatha. She was the sixth child in a family of 12 children. The family lived near Hallston, which is on the Bena side of Korumburra and Ruby attended school at the Bena State School. When she was about age 16 the family moved to Ruby and she worked at the Ruby Post Office.
Ruby was a beautiful person, both in looks and nature. She had and brown eyes and black hair wavy hair, which was always kept short. She joined the tennis club and because of working at the Post Office got to meet everyone in the district. One of her hobbies was knitting.
Ruby fell pregnant straight away and Allan was at Morita between New Guinea and Borneo in 1945 when a son Robert was born in 1945.
Allan served in New Guinea, Borneo and a few of the Islands around the area. At Port Moresby he worked with his older brother Albert (Bill) unloading supplies from the ships. He was trained as a cook and worked at that for a while.
After the War, Ruby and Allan bought the farm over the other side of the Railway line from his parent's farm and milked cows.
Two more children were added to the family, a daughter Leslie on the 16th February 1948 and another son Greg on 3rd March 1954.
They stayed at this farm for about 7 or 8 years. The children had started attending the Ruby State School and because the times they were doing the milking was the same times to go and return from school it made it too hard.
They shifted to Korumburra and Allan got a job in the Butter Factory and worked there for about 12 months. While they were in Korumburra, they got a house built but not long after it was finished sold it and went share-farming at Tarwin River.
The next move was to Allambee South where they brought a farm and milked cows there for about 10 years. Then it was back to Korumburra, where Allan worked at the Butter Factory again, this time for 10 years. He also worked at the Sale yards for 3 years. Ruby worked in her brother's fruit shop in Korumburra.
They both took up golf and it became one of their favourite pastimes.
Ruby and Allan went for a trip around Australia in 1976. They were away for 3 and a half years.
When they returned home, Allan got a job at the Coal Creek Historical Park and stayed there for 2 and a half years after which he retired.
Ruby and Allan decided to move to the beach and built a house at Cape Paterson. They lived there for about 10 and half years. Ruby was diagnosed with cancer and she passed away on the 3rd January 2000.
Allan decided to shift back to Korumburra and stayed for two years. He then shifted to daughter Leslie's home at Mt Helen in 2004. He found the arrangement didn't work out so moved back to Korumburra again.
