Romain Smith enlsted in the Australian Imperial Force on 2/2/1915. His father was listed as next of kin and the address was Mr. Luke T. G. Smith, Pine Grove, Private Bag, Bawford. Romain’s trade was Government Fencing.
The Certificate of Medical Examination describes Romain as 22 years and two months, height - 5 feet 5and a half inches, weight - 158 pounds, chest measurement - 35/39and a half inches, complexion - fair, eyes - brown green, hair - brown and religious denomination - Methodist. The distinctive marks were four vacs on back and side of left arm.
Romain was sent to Gallipoli and landed on 30/8/1915. He was admitted to hospital with pains in abdomen 24/9/1915. He was admitted with Typhoid on 1/2/1916 . He was invalided to Australia and embarked on 11/4/1916 on the “Runic”for 3 months change.
Romain returned to fighting at Tel-el-Kebir in Egypt and on 4/8/1916 was absent from parade. He was awarded 7 days C.B and forfeits i days pay. On 5/8/1916 his conduct to the pred, of good order and Mil. Disc. in that he adopted an offecnsive attitude towards R.T.O. when told to parade before his officer. Awarded 5 days F.F. No. 2. On the 21/1/1917 at El Risa he negleted to obey routine order in that he mutilated a fruit tree. Forfeits 1 days pay.
Romain was once again admitted to Hospital on 28/1/1917 with debility and Neuresthenia. He was sent back to Australia and embarked on 8/3/1917 and discharged

Romain married Clarice Ethel Groube Wallis, daughter of William Thomas Wallis and Victorine Groube, on 17 Dec 1918 in 39 Kinkora Rd, Kew, Victoria Australia.
