• source. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=foxwf60 where it is recorded:
On his army record (PRO W097 499) George was described as 5ft 8 inches tall, light hair, grey eyes, fair complexion. He served in the 28th Regiment of Foot (North Gloucestershire). He enlisted in 1805 and was discharged 14th February 1816 after 10 years and 216 days of service. The reason for discharge was that he was adjudged unfit for service from being shot in the left thigh on 18th June 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo.
He received a pension from 8th March 1816.
He was in receipt of the Military General Service medal with clasps for the battle of Corunna, 16 Jan 1809; Barrosa, 5 Mar 1811; Pyrenees, 28 Jul to 8 Aug 1813 and Toulouse, 10 Apr 1814. In the medal roll his name is spelt LAVAIS. He was also in receipt of the Waterloo Medal.
After George's enlistment the 28th Regiment of Foot fought in the Peninsula War against the invading French army and saw action at the battles of Vimiero (1808),Talavera (1809), Albuhera (1809), Salamanca (1812), Vittoria (1812), Pyrenees (1813) and Toulouse on 10th April 1814. Napoleon abdicated four days later and the 28th entered Bordeaux where they were warmly received by the French people.
Finally at Waterloo the 28th were in the very centre of the Allied line and suffered horrific casualties with 250 killed and wounded out of the 657 men. In Wellington's despatch he wrote: "I must particularly mention the 28th, 42nd, 79th and 92nd Regiments." Thus the 28th were the only English regiment mentioned, the others being Scottish regiments.
