William and his second wife, Mary Maynard, migrated to Australia aboard the sailing ship Maitland in 1838, with five of his children and their families (William, John, James, Edwin and Sarah). The Maitland left Gravesend in England, on 24th June 1838, arriving in New South Wales on 5th November 1838. The voyage proved to be disasterous for the families as they lost four children (Sarah [daughter of William and Harriet], Henry [son of Edwin and Mary], David [son of James and Hannah] and Thomas [son of John and Mercy]) to scarlet fever and typhus during that trip and one youngster, John [another son of James and Hannah] died in quarantine soon after arriving in Australia.
Another two children of William and Mary Copper, left England for Australia on separate voyages.
Mary and Charles Mummery sailed on the Lady Nugent in 1841, arriving in New Zealand on 17th March 1841. They later sailed on the Ann for the crossing to New South Wales, arriving on 12th September 1843.
Stephen and Sarah Bovis sailed on the Fairlie arriving in New South Wales on 5th November 1841.
They all settled in the Dapto - Jamberoo area of the New South Wales south Coast.
