Joseph left England from Plymouth on 24th February 1857, on board the ship Herefordshire, with his wife Louisa, and two eldest children, Albin James and Eliza Ann. They arrived in Australia on 27th May 1857.
Joseph was commissioned to work on several building projects in the lower Hunter area for a few months after his arrival, eventually coming to Fordwich in the latter part of 1857 to become employed by the Blaxland family, by this time another family member Arthur Blaxland was in charge and he was living in the Fordwich Homestead.
