King of England, nicknamed `Ironside`. His death in 1016 without a male heir led to the crowning of his brother, Edward Atheling as King. The Dukes of Normandy and Princes of Denmark questioned the legality and put forth a claim for the throne but the Danes won out and Knute and his sons ruled England until 1042, when the Saxon Monarchy was restored. When Edward Atheling, the last Saxon King of England, died in January 1066, Harold (a half Danish Prince) ruled for 9 months but faced both a Danish and a Norman invasion. He was defeated at Hastings.
