  General Notes:

Jane Edwards notes:
John's parents were William Elliot and Betty Elliot. No maiden name is given on Nenion's family tree for her - that part of Liddesdale was full of Elliots. As I expect you know it was their clan territory, the lands having been given to the Elliots by Robert the Bruce in the 14th century. William and Betty were buried in Castleton cemetery - William reached 75 in 1827 - born c. 1752 and Betty died 1828 aged 73 so born c. 1755.Castleton is near the village of Newcastleton in Liddesdale, near the English border.
William's parents were William Elliot (Gent.) of Cleughead in Liddesdale and Annie Mathewson. (This William had brothers George and Gilbert)
William (gent.)'s father was Walter of the Brough. No wife given but he had three brothers: William of Braidlee, John of Castleton and Robert of Whitrup.
I have identified Castleton, Braidley, and Whitterhope as spelt now not far from each other which is why I doubt that Brough is Brough, a town in Cumbria. It may well be a place abandoned as Liddesdale became depopulated.

William married Betty. (Betty was born circa 1755, died in 1828 and was buried in Castleton, near the village of Newcastleton in Liddesdale, near the English border.)
