John Rich

John was a soldier, Drover and later Publican. He and his wife Elizabeth had nine children. Their first child Elizabeth was born in 1811. At the baptism of John Jr. in 1815 John was a soldier. He was described as a labourer at Charles baptism in 1817, and also at Eliza`s baptism in 1819. George was born in 1822, Henry in 1826, Matilda in 1827, Emma in 1829 and William in 1832. William died the same year.
From the Overseers and poor rate books for Hornchurch 1831, December 13, John Rich with 7 children applied for a piece of calico for the family and some relief for the children. He was granted 8yds of calico for the children and 2lbs of bacon but his character`s very drunkard.
He was variously described as sometime soldier, labourer and victualler. Studying the birth pattern of the children it is likely that he went soldiering between his first and second children. This was at the time of the Napoleonic threat, when there were 6 troops of Cavalry at the Romford Barracks.
1815 - serving Soldier at Barracks Romford.
1831 - applies for relief from Parish at Hornchurch.
1848/51 - Licensee of Liberty Arms, Waterloo Road.
1861 - Licensee in High Street.
1871 - Retired Drover living Attewells Yard, High Street.
1876 - Died age 85 at Victory Road.
Whatever did or did not happen at the Battle of Waterloo, John Rich settled in Romford and his main work was that of a drover/cattle dealer. He was living in Romford High Street in 1841 with Elizabeth, Matilda and Emma. He became the landlord of the Liberty Arms between 1845 (when the landlord was John Holmes) and 1848, when he is listed as the landlord by Whites directory. He remained the landlord until after 1855, but the publican was a William Loveday by 1861.
