My grandmother Ethel May (Neal) Brown was the daughter of Peter Brown and Mary Ann Neal (known as Brown as it appears to have been a 'defacto' relationship) but nee Garment.
However there appears to be some 'connection' as an earlier daughter Mary Ann Neal born in 1883 (and therefore sister of Ethel May?) married Harold P Bray. It is difficult to get to the bottom of it. Because of the conventions of the day perhaps, this Mary Ann Neal has her father listed as just 'Neal' in ancestry but it appears that Peter Brown and Mary Ann Neal (nee Garment b.1859) may have been living together then. There are also private documents referring to a divorce petition for Neal v Neal connected to Peter Brown .
It's intriguing isn't it. I spent ages last night wondering if it was in fact the same person but the parents I think rule it out and I was always told that the name of my grandmother's father was Peter Brown and they lived in Bathurst.
