  General Notes:

Ian Carter notes:
The death occurred on Tuesday at Skene, of Mr. John Robertson, a gentleman who has been identified with the pastoral life of Victoria. For many years he lived at Victoria Valley, and some 20 odd years ago purchased Skene, where he has since remained. About the year 1856 he married Miss Carter of Rosebrook, and had a family of two sons and five daughters, all of whom survive him, viz, Mr. Thomas Robertson, Murtoa; Mr. James Robertson, Skene; Mrs. Duigan, Melbourne; Mrs. Dr. Cross, Gazette; Mrs. A. J. Simpson, Clifton; Mrs. Barber, Kanawalla; Mrs. S. B. Palmer, Lyndhurst, Hamilton. Of the original family one sister alone remains in Mrs. Philip, of Miga Lake, a mother of Messrs. W. Philip, Kenilworth; Jas. Philip, Morven; John Philip, Arcot Heath; Alex. Philip, Miga Lake; and Thomas Philip, St. Mary's, Noradjuha. Mr. Robertson was of a retiring disposition, and never took a prominent part in public affairs. He was always fond of horses and racing, and took some interest in coursing. At various times he owned some excellent horseflesh, and his colors were successful on most of the Western district courses, but he raced for pure love of the sport. In a quiet and unobtrusive way Mr. Robertson did a large amount of good, but for some time his advancing years told against him, and he became subject to apoplectic attack, one of which was ultimately responsible for his demise at the age of over 82 years. The funeral took place on Thursday (says the Independent) the remains being buried in the Hamilton Cemetery.
