The biological parents of Valerie and Irwin were Charles Hartley Stokes and Laura Gladys Poynton. Charles was an engineer who died after an industrial accident in 1927, while Gladys died in 1932 of an infection, leaving Valerie, Irwin and three other children as orphans. The children were adopted by members of their mother's extended family. In my father's case, he was adopted by his grandfather's brother, while Valerie was taken into care by her Aunt Ida. In Valerie's case, no formal adoption was ever undertaken and until her marriage to Frank Lynn, her legal surname was Stokes, not Paton.

Ida married Adolph Ernest Paton in 1912. (Adolph Ernest Paton was born on 13 May 1882 in Dumfries, Dumfrieshire Scotland UK and died in Aug 1974.)
