Research Notes:
Kay Adams (nee Mason) notes: I am on the trail of my great grandfather and his 2 brothers who were placed in the Male Protestant Orphan School in Sydney when they were only aged 5, 7 and 8 in 1858.
William Mason was the youngest of the boys and was apprenticed out 09.10.1866 to a Mr George Turnbull of Sackville Reach for 5 years. I noticed you have a George Turnbull of Sackville Reach in your tree and was hoping you may have come across any of this information in your research?
My great grandfather was the eldest - he was the Thomas Mason who rode with Thunderbolt. The other brother was George who was apprenticed out to Edward Joy of Newtown - I am yet to find out what happened to him yet as well.
My great grandfather was Thomas Mason who was the bushranger apprentice with Thunderbolt. He and his 2 brothers, William and George were placed in the male Protestant Orphanage School in Sydney in 1858, a short time after their father died. Their mother obviously couldn't afford to keep them - she went on to become a local prostitute I believe. Anyway, the boys remained in the orphanage until they each turned 13 when they were then apprenticed out. Thomas Mason born 1850 and apprenticed out to Mr Shaw of Gilchrist Watt & Co before moving on to the interior and hooking up with Thunderbolt.
George Mason born about 1851 and apprenticed out in 1865 to Mr Edward Joy of Newtown - possibly the founder of the Ragged Schools.
William Mason born about 1853 and apprenticed out to George Turnbull of Sackville Reach for 5 years. I think I am on the correct path with his marriage to Kate Moss - just waiting on certs. Because I saw your George Turnbull of Sackville Reach in your tree I thought you may have had some research on his activities on the property - a long shot really for a mention of taking in kids from the orphanage.
