Noted events in his life were: • source. Mark Prince • fact. Rupert was a Lt Cmdr on the 1st hmas Voyager when it ran aground on Timor, when it was attacked by Japanese air force in the Timor sea. The Voyager was landing a Dutch / Australian guerilla force at the time. Rupert was hit by shrapnel and was discharged as medically unfit. In 1944 he received the (DSC) Distinguished Service Cross, for his bravery and enterprise during the Mediterranean battle of Matapan in 1941. Rupert married Elizabeth Irene (Betty) Ashcroft, daughter of Leslie James Ashcroft and Irene Stuart Shearman, in 1933 in Liverpool, Sydney, NSW Australia. (Elizabeth Irene (Betty) Ashcroft was born on 24 Mar 1912 in Liverpool, Sydney, NSW Australia, died on 26 Jun 1966 in Springwood, NSW Australia and was buried in Liverpool General Cemetery, Sydney, NSW Australia.) |
