James Cronk

  • Born: Cir 1815
  • Marriage (1): Jane Storer

Noted events in his life were:

• source. Peter & Inta Warner who writes:
James Cronk who was a well known man in early settlement days here in SA. He was fluent in Aboriginal languages and there are a few references to him if you Google him. There was a commemorative plaque to his efforts on the banks of our mighty Torrens River but with prettying up of the banks it has been put into safe storage somewhere. He was married to a widow Jane Storer who was licensee of one of Adelaide's oldest hotels the Rob Roy.
There is also an unsubstantiated story told by my grandfather that he was told that George Morris 2 (his father) was actually the son of a high up officer in the English army whose wife died at childbirth and who arranged for George and Elizabeth to adopt the infant and bring him to Australia, giving them a sizeable amount of money for their efforts. We have the baptism certificate for 1837 but have chased no further to try and verify the story. Family stories say that George 2 and his subsequent descendants were a lot taller than the other lines of the family who were more like the stocky Cornish miners.

James married Jane Storer. (Jane Storer was born circa 1820.)
