  Research Notes:

source: Pat Sheen who notes:
Randall and his wife and two children arrived in SA on "The Reliance" in 1851. Randall was born 8-7-1820 in Hingham, Norfolk. His family were previously in Ashwellthorpe, Norfolk.
Our first Walton ancestors to arrive in South Australia in 1851 were Randall Walton and his wife Elizabeth Websdale with two children (Elizabeth's twin sister, Rebecca and her family, had arrived the year before). They were all from Norfolk, England and I have endeavoured to trace their ancestors in Norfolk, many of whom had their surnames recorded as 'Welton'.

The name Walton is said to be derived from walled town ("wal" as in wall and "ton" as in town. Some researchers suggest the earliest Waltons came from Wales others say elsewhere, but I do not intend to get into that argument nor delve that deeply. Shipping records show our Walton ancestors came from Norfolk to Australia - there were not too many Waltons in Norfolk at that time, and most of those were born elsewhere. There were, interestingly families in Norfolk in the 1841 census whose surname was Randle and others had the surname of Randall and I thought perhaps Randall Walton was named for his Randall Walton's mother's family who might have been Randall, and as it turns out Randall was the name of Randall Walton's grandmother (Sarah Randall).

The earliest records for Randall's ancestors (surname generally shown as Welton) appear in Ashwellthorpe, In the Depwade District of Norfolk. Later records (from c 1800) show most of them have moved across to Wymondham and Hingham in the Forehoe District.

HINGHAM
Hingham, 17 miles from Norwich, is a market town and civil parish in the Forehoe district. Grand architecture surrounds the market place and village green. In the 18th century, when the socialites of high society built and took residence in Hingham, it became fashionably known as "little London".

The Formula 1 Lotus racing team is based at Hingham. Team Lotus had previously been based at Norfolk until bankrupt in 1994 but then resurrected in 2010. The nearest railway stations are Wymondham and Attleborough on the Breckland Line.
