Notes for *Raymond Fred HOOD: Raymond joined the Masonic Lodge.
Lodge Werona at Hornsby was his first Lodge. After WW11 he joined F S Mance No: 671, when they first started at Chatswood.
Ray became a POW during WW11 when he was captured in Libya by the Italian Army. He was interred in Italy and after abuse at the hand of the Italian soldiers, there was a mass escape from the camp and a large number of men escaped to Switzerland via the Alps. A copy of the diary, written by Jimmy Hyland, was given to the family and is held by Norman his son.
AUSTRALIANS ESCAPE TO SWITZERLAND LONDON, Friday.-About 100 Australians, escaping across the Alps from Italian prisoner of war camps, arrived recently at Brique, Switzerland, where a big Protestant gathering was being held, says: "The Times" correspondent at Geneva. Ray was unemployed when he joined the Army at the start of WW11.
When he returned from overseas, he obtained a job at the Sydney Morning Herald as a Photo Engraver, which he had learnt about colour engraving whilst in Switzerland during the War.
He lost part of his leg when he developed diabetes and also from complications from having his leg bashed during WW11 as a POW.
