  General Notes:

Ken Slee notes:
I am researching my Slee/Taite family tree and one aspect of it is driving me to drink.

One of my ancestors (Harriett Taite, gg grandmother) had a sister Elizabeth Taite who married a George Nayler from Darlington in 1817 in London. A Lucy A Nayler was one witness to the marriage. I have had no luck whatsoever in tracking Elizabeth and George Nayler down after their marriage. My George Nayler was a leather worker and Matthew Nayler (of the Methodist Church) was apparently also a leather worker.

I suspect that Matthew Naylor of the Methodist Church in Darlington was my George and Lucy's father but there were two Matthew Naylers having children baptised at St Cuthbert's in Darlington at the time so I can't be definite.

I notice that you have a Mary Stephenson on your site who was christened by Dr Coke in Matthew Nayler's parlour at Darlington in 1806 and that she died near Moyston in 1879.

From a source on the web (academic Dr Wallace Kirsop) I know that a Benjamin Suggitt Nayler, a son of Matthew Nayler (of the parlour and Methodist Church) of Darlington came to Melbourne in 1865 and his wife died and was buried at Stawell in 1874 for no reason known to Dr Kirsop other than the Naylers had friends in Australia when they emigrated from England. However, it seems possible that there was an ongoing relationship of some sort between the Naylers/Bowes/Stephensons.

Do you have any information that might help me to confirm that my George Nayler is a son of the Methodist Church Nayler, what happened to them after their marriage in 1817, or whether Benjamin Suggitt Nayler and his wife were visiting the Bowes at Moyston when she died (Dr Kirsop would undoubtedly be very pleased to have that confirmed)?

I look forward to any help that you may be able to give!

Noted events in her life were:

• source. & Ann Schramms who writes:
Mary was christened by Dr. Coke in the Wesleyan faith. This is the Dr. Coke who was John Wesleys 2 IC. He is worth googling for his notable contributions to reform. Dr Coke & Wesley preached to the (unwashed) miners in the open. Mary has a relative called Hilda who was witness to her daughter Mary Ann's second marriage to Wm Derham Clarke at Lexington Station near Moyston Victoria

Mary married Martin Bowe, son of John Bowe and Ann Martin, on 28 Oct 1832 in St Cuthberts, Darlington, Durham England. (Martin Bowe was born on 19 May 1807 in Barden, Yorkshire England, christened on 31 May 1807 in St Oswalds, Hauxwell, North Yorkshire England and died on 9 Mar 1891 in Lexington Station, near Moyston, Victoria Australia.)
