Jason Goodsir writes:
William Goodsir would marry twice in his life before he died in Newcastle NSW in 1887. William would father three more children to another woman , Emily Louisa Taylor , the first of these children was conceived when Emily was only fourteen years old , William would marry Emily when she was only seventeen years old and William was Fourty nine years old . William was my great , great, great grandfather.
In 1887 on or about the 30th of March William Goodsir committed suicide by drowning himself in the ocean and was washed up on Long Beach Newcastle. We know that he took over his brother John's Timber and Ship building business when John returned to Scotland and it would be a few years before the work ran out for William. He was majorly in debt, he never declared bankruptcy, he never reached out to his family for a loan either as his Brother David and his eldest son David James Cook Goodsir were very wealthy men, both worked as Customs officers. In fact David Goodsir, Williams eldest brother was the very first Customs Officer in Australia, but I will save his story for another day. I do not believe that William Goodsir committed suicide, for some very strange reason think that he was murdered because he could not pay back his creditors.
The name GOODSIR is a Gaelic translation from the word GUIDSIR. Guidsir means Grand Wizard, Grand Chief and Grand Father. During the proclamation of the McGreigor name from the late 1500's to the late 1600's, all the McGreogor clan had to use aliases, and as our great relatives were Guid Chieftans of the McGreigor clan some began to use and adopt the last name of Guidsir translated into English for the British, turned out to be GOODSIR.

• Occupation. shoemaker & master weaver

• emigrated. They emigrated to Australia aboard the New York Packer with their 5 children in 1842. They lived with his brother David Goodsir in Macquarie House from 1842 - 1843. In 1843 William and family moved onto the land of his brother John Goodsir after John returned to Scotland with his family .
