James McGregor's birth is a bit of a mystery - His father Robert did not marry until later in life, age 59, but had 2, presumably illegitimate, children earlier. (William and James) There is no trace of a record of James's birth In 1861 he is with father Robert at Fintray - age 13, scholar, born St Nicholas In 1871 he may be at Andet, Methlick as a farm servant - age 22, born St Nicholas In 1881 - married and at Fyvie, age 31, born St Nicholas Death cert names Elspet Mortimer, Robert's wife, as James's mother - but this may just be lack of knowledge on the part of the person notifying the death (although not impossible that the couple met back in the 1840's but did not marry til much later) 1851 census does not clarify much - in Aberdeenshire, there are 2 possibles. One James McGregor age 3 staying as a Visitor with Adam Watson, shoemaker and his wife Mary at 21 Spring Garden. No clues as to his father or mother, or any relationship with the Watsons. The other James McGrigor age 4 living at Newhills with mother Christian McGrigor, widow of a blacksmith there are 2 siblings, Margaret age 7 and Henry age 2.
