John Gray according to Joan Goodin's book The Butler Brew is stated to have been born in Windsor Middlesex and to have travelled to Australia on the immigrant ship the Countess Russell in 1873. The ship left London on 1st March 1873 and arrived in Rockhjampton 30th June 1873. Five adults and fifteen children died before reaching Keppel Bay and Rockhampton. The Countess Russell was later wrecked south of Bustard Bay on wreck Reef while on her voyage to Newcastle.

In an article in the Belgian Gardens State School Centenary Book :One Hundred Years with information on Jane Gray during her period as a teacher at the school it is recorded that John Gray was an ex Royal Navy man.

Initially John was a fisherman in partnership with a Dane named Lawson but when this man died he joined the railways 13th March 1885 and became storeman 4th July 1911 and remained in this position until he retired 13th August 1921. The family lived at 14 Armstrong St Hermit Park Townsvile.


John married Emma Esther Butler, daughter of Henry (Harry) Butler and Elizabeth Whitfield, on 16 Oct 1881 in Melton Hill, Townsville, Queensland Australia in the home of Rev William Gray. (Emma Esther Butler was born on 1 Feb 1864 in Liverpool, Merseyside (Lancashire) England, died on 4 Feb 1946 in Townsville, Queensland Australia and was buried in West End Cemetery, Townsville, Queensland Australia #7294.)
