HANNAH ALDERSON. Hannah was a young lady employed as a servant in the household of William Johnson, a schoolmaster in Yorkshire, when the Crown Calender for the Yorkshire Summer Assizes carried the following listing:

9. (Aged 26) HANNAH ALDERSON, late of Gilmamby, in the North riding, single woman committed by the Court of General Quarter Sessions, holden at Northallerton for the said riding, the 7th April, 1807, until she shall find sufficient sureties to enter into recognisance with her for her personal appearance at the next Assizes to be holden for the County of York, to answer an indictment to be preferred against her for perjury, by her committed in open court at the above sessions.

The sentence was transportation beyond the seas for the term of seven years, and so Hannah and her son William were put aboard the “Speke” and along with ninety-eight other female prisoners, sailed from Falmouth. One hundred and-
