• Obituary. 535 Reg Roughan notes:
'TRANSCRIPTION OF SALVATORE LONGOBARDI'S OBITUARY

Death, Dubbo, NSW, 1907.
___
Mr. Salvator Longobardi (1829 - 1907).
___
POSSIBLY few residents of Dubbo were better known or more highly respected than Mr. Salvator Longobardi, whose unexpected decease took place on Saturday last.
Mr. Longobardi, who was an Italian by birth, came to Australia in the early fifties to push his fortunes.
He began Australian life as a miner on the Mudgee - Gulgong gold-fields nearly 50 years ago, (aft. 1857). Later he took road contracts in various parts of the western districts; and, some 22 years ago, (1885), entered into business as an inn-keeper at the Fitzroy Hotel, North Dubbo. Throughout his long association with the town, Mr. Longobardi's name was a synonym for the highest integrity and sterling worth, and, although naturally most unassuming and taking no part in public or official life, no man was held in higher esteem by all classes. His hostelry was conducted on old-fashioned irreproachable lines which made it deservedly popular in the best sense.
Mr. Longobardi signified his intention of retiring from business on the occasion of the marriage of his last-wedded daughter some four years ago (1903), and removed to Sydney. About two years later, however, he found the connections and claims of his earlier life too strong to be further resisted; and to the satisfaction of his many friends he returned to his old home in North Dubbo and re-entered on business.
He was in his 78th year at the time of his decease. Though he had for some years suffered from dropsical tendencies it was not contemplated that these would exhibit any alarming developments - at least for some time. But of late with advancing years his constitution became more enfeebled, and during the last fortnight his health utterly gave way, and he took very ill on Wednesday night, and was soon beyond the help of medical aid. The end came as stated on Saturday last.
The deceased leaves a widow and eleven children - three sons and eight daughters. Two of the former, Messrs. John and Richard Longobardi, reside in this district. Of his many daughters (all of whom are married) two reside in Sydney, (one line indecipherable due to tear in paper), three in West Australia, and the others reside in South Australia, and Victoria. Of the three West Australians, one - Mrs. J.T. Connors - was with him at the last, being at present at the old home on a brief visit. A peculiar circumstance in connection with this is that Mrs. Connors' trip home was induced by reports of her mother's alarming illness about Christmas time. Mrs. Longobardi has since made a good recovery, but the hand of death which it was feared was hovering over her, struck down instead the father of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Longobardi would have celebrated their golden wedding in June next (m. 1858).
The funeral on Sunday afternoon was very largely attended, members from all denominations being present. The remains were interred in the R.C. division of the general cemetery, Rev. Father Cooney officiating.'

Salvatore married Maria Roughan, daughter of John (Batty) Roughan and Mary McNamara. (Maria Roughan was born in 1839 in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland UK and died on 6 Sep 1923 in Randwick, Sydney, NSW Australia.)
