We obtained information about George in Tasmania. In April 1829 Georgel applied for a land grant and his father's friend Henry Boden Torlesse wrote a reference. Information was that George was 22 years old and from Suffolk. Torlesse siad that he was a friend of George's father who was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy; that George had a farming background; that George's father had instructed him (Torlesse) to advance to George 600 pounds for development of the land.
So we looked at Steeles in the Royal Navy. We found George Steele born about 1761. (from death information)
Mary Ann Mealing was born c1790
Two George Steeles were promoted to lieutenant 1794.
A George Steele was a lieutenant on the Monmouth at the battle of Camperdown 1797 when Edward Bromley was surgeon on that ship at that battle.
The other George Steele died 1805/6 at the shipwreck of the Seaforth.
George Steele married Mary Ann Mealing at Orford, Suffolk 10 September 1807.

Commander George Steele, RN, who had retired 1829 died at Orford, Suffolk 13 April, 1839. Aged 78 - so born c1761.

Mary Ann Steele was in the 1841 and 1851 censuses living at Orford, Suffolk. annuant. 1851 census said that she had been born at Orford. DOB estimated 1791.

Mary Ann Steele died at Orford, Suffolk 1854, March quarter.

Though we could not find a birth for George about 1808 we firmly believe that the George Steele who married Mary Ann Mealing 1807 are the parents of 'our' George Steele.

I have done further research on Mary Ann Mealing and now, I believe, the Mary who was born at Reydon was not the one who married George Steele in 1807. She married Robert Mills. All the other information stands firm but I have to look for another Mary Ann Mealing. I don't think she is on the net! Maybe Orford records could give more information.
