John William Roser

  • Born: 1879, Patricks Plains, near Singleton, NSW Australia
  • Marriage (1): Louisa (Lou) Maunder on 31 Jan 1912 in Tamworth, NSW Australia 373
  • Died: 11 Jul 1939, Tamworth, NSW Australia at age 60

Noted events in his life were:

• Property. 373 Rosy Manton notes:
Called "Winton Bill".
1907-13 Duncans Creek, labourer & farmer
1913-16 Goonoo Goonoo Rd, Tam., labourer
1921-2 Duri, via Tam., sharefarmer
1925 Winton, via Tam.,

To find his property: Turn left off the Oxley Hwy/Gunnedah Rd onto the Winton Road & continue past the airport for about 20kms, going to McGowan Road. At McGowan Road turn right/West & continue to the 'T' intersection. Turn right at the 'T' onto Macumba Lane & continue for a few kms to "Old Winton Road" where you take a left hand turn. On Old Winton Road continue past Dawson Lane/Somerton for a few more kms to a dip with concrete culvert. Old Winton Road is a dead end road. When through this culvert, look South across the paddock to the left hand hill, where a tank can be seen at the base.
His children would have had to drive a sulky or ride a horse to Dawsons Lane/Somerton where they would have turned left & continued to the 'T' intersection where they would then have taken another left hand turn. In essence they went in a 'U', to finally end up at the Bective Soldiers Settlement School that was directly opposite their home. The Bective Soldiers Settlement School was on the high rise & right hand side about 1.5kms from the 'T', but is without a signpost. I suppose that until the Bective Soldiers Settlement School was built they went the 6 miles to the Winton School. The
Bective Soldiers Settlement School was 6 miles from their home while the Bective Soldiers Settlement School was only 4.75 miles.
John & Louisa lived at "Rosedale", Winton which was100 acres but he left a property on Black Lane, Winton to buy "Rosedale". He rented this property on Black Lane from the Chaffeys but then had the opportunity to buy it, but didn't. It had everything including a dairy as well as water already set up on it. "Rosedale" had nothing & to start with he just had tin leaning against trees while the children slept on bags when they firs moved there. "Rosedale" was the cheaper property. The dairy was built first then the house. There were also pigs to drink the left-over milk. The property extended over the hill & to the west & both sides went down to flats which were watered by 3 big dams & a bore that were later put in to grow feed & grain for the dairy cattle as well as the family vegetable garden. They had to go through the Atkinson property to access "Rosedale".

John also worked off the property as a farm hand in the district. Sometimes he would go every day & if the places were further away he would be gone for some
time. He was a good stockman & rider. Thelma said he was capable of riding a bucking horse.

Towards the end of his life, he & Lou did not get along well.

Thelma remembers the large sores he had on his back & as she was growing up he was always sick. Later in life she realised that the sores were actually cancer sores. To go to school they walked across properties to the Bective Soldiers Settlement School, which was 3 miles each way. They wore shoes to school but had to go bare foot at home t keep the shoes for school use only.

John married Louisa (Lou) Maunder, daughter of Henry Prior Maunder and Esther Lewis Thompson, on 31 Jan 1912 in Tamworth, NSW Australia.373 (Louisa (Lou) Maunder was born in 1891 373 and died on 16 Feb 1977 in Tamworth, NSW Australia.)
