• source. & Carol Nolan
& http://www.fairhall.id.au/families/myline/p929.htm#i23207 & Lisa Baker (nee Meagher)] who through Catherine notes:
Emma Maria Duproy called the twins Amy Evans Oxford and Robert Thornley Oxford after her 2nd and 3rd husbands.Apparently in those days it wasn't unusual to name your child after someone close to you. Evans was passed on through Amy's family whereas Thornley was passed on through the Oxford family. Now mum known as Irene June Gothard Oxford was named so because Gothard came from the Ellery side. Mum wasn't given Thornley because they wanted to give this to their first born son but when Aunty Helen was born they thought they would never have a son so she got Thornley in her name . Then of course Uncle Ray was born and so he also got Thornley in his name. His boys have now passed it onto their sons.
Aunty Helen said she didn't know what apprenticeships John and Thomas did but they think it was in the construction industry. She hasn't looked up N.Davidson, Surrey Hills or she couldn't find it.
I told you about Timothy Oxford who died at 8 months. He died from dysentry. Notification of the death was by his father John Oxford who lived at 8 Kent St, Sydney.
Aunty Helen and Uncle Peter then went on to say that John Oxford (Senior), born in Antigua, West Indies. His father may have jumped ship and changed his name to Oxford in order to fit in. Back them Antigua was a British Colony and everyone was anglicsising their name - denying their African heritage (ie: slave heritage). If this is true then that means my great, great, great grandfather may have been a black african slave! Also it would be near impossible to trace back what the family name was if a change had occured.
