Mary's mother, Lucy Lane was a young Englishwoman who arrived in Sydney as a free person on 27 May 1797, aboard the convict transport ship 'Ganges'. Other sources record that they arrived aboard the ship 'Britannia' on 18 Jul, quoting that Lucy in the 1828 census, recorded her arrival per the 'Britannia'. Lucy accompanied Thomas Sherland, a private in the 102nd Regiment, also known as the NSW Corps, and later as the Rurn Corps. During the voyage, in the Bay of Biscay, Lucy gave birth to Mary Lane Sherland, probably on 28 December 1796.


Mary married Benjamin Singleton, son of William Singleton and Hannah Parkinson, on 4 Feb 1811 in Windsor, NSW Australia. (Benjamin Singleton was born on 7 Aug 1788 in Cripplegate Within London, Middlesex England, died on 3 May 1853 in Singleton, NSW Australia and was buried on 4 May 1853 in Whittingham (Singleton) cemetery, NSW Australia.)
