Andrew Zanella notes:
Some quick history on my grandparents (Bruno/Marjorie), back in 1989 they got into a very bad car accident while enroute to a family friend's wedding. They were both taken to hospital, with my grandmother in critical condition. My grandfather appeared to have had less injuries and was conscious and functioning from his hospital bed. Unfortunately, he was actually in worse condition than the doctors suspected. He had received an internal injury and was bleeding from within. He went into shock and passed away very suddenly while in hospital. The doctors tried to save him but there was too much blood lost. It was a big blow to the family because his injuries really did appear superficial to my grandmother's.
We had the funeral service for him and I still remember it being quite amazing. He was very popular in town (Alliston, Ontario) since he was involved with city council, he volunteered regularly at the local hospital and he worked at a grocery store in town...and he was SUPPOSED to be retired! haha My grandmother missed the funeral of course, she remained unconscious and in the intensive care unit for many months, I think it was at least 6 months. It was very difficult on the family because the doctors advised us not to tell her he passed away, fearing that her health would deteriorate. So I remember my father and uncle telling her he was in another part of the hospital being cared for. Once she was more stable, they broke the news to her that he passed away several months ago. It was a difficult time for her but it really was quite a miracle that she survived. She lived another 10 yrs after this incident.
I was very close to my grandparents as I visited them almost weekly when I was younger. Alliston is a fairly small town, in comparison to Toronto of course. So it was always nice to go in the countryside. They had a lovely house sitting on top of the hill, a river ran along the bottom of the hill and we (me and my cousins) used to play in the water and even fish there. When my grandmother passed away, my father took over the house. I had just finished university around this time so the timing was good in that they were able to move up there and I could start my working life in Toronto. They have been up there ever since. I still don't see it as my parent's house though, haha, I see it like they are just caretakers of the house for my grandparents. My parents are both getting older now (my father is 68 and my mother is 65) and I have often thought about what I will do after they pass...would I want to keep this house in the family or is it time to sell it. I think when the time comes it will be a difficult decision either way.
