  General Notes:

Wendy Henwood notes:

I think that your Mary Sarah Carlin, born about 1842, is the aunt of your Alice May *Calin* born 10 Jan 1905.

This is a new branch to me, but from what I've found so far it looks like:

James Carlin had four children:
Mary (m Edward Grant Hood), James, Charles, and Francis

Francis married twice - at least four children from his second marriage to Alice Thompson:
Arthur William, 1899, Allen Francis, 1901, and Alice May, 1905

I found this obituary online -
OBITUARY Mr. Francis John Carlin
Mr. Francis John Carlin, Allendale East, who died in Mt. Gambier on Saturday, November 3 after an illness of three weeks, was born at sea, off the coast of South Africa, in August, 1857. He was 88 years of age. He was brought to Australia soon after by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. James Carlin. His first wife Miss Mary Hyde, predeceased him and later he married Miss Alice Thompson, who now resides in Sydney. He had two sons, Lieutenant Arthur William Carlin, A.I.F., Mr. Alan Francis Carlin and one daughter. Mrs. May Fackerall, all of Sydney. He had two brothers. the late Messrs. Charles and James Carlin both of Allendale, and one sister, the late Mrs. Mary Hood, Mt. Schank.
For many years he was an organiser for the A.W.U. He took an interest in military matters and for several years was an efficient member of the Port Mac Donnell Defence Rifle Club. He was a stone mason by trade and a good shearer, an occupation he followed for many years. He was a good musician and his services were much in demand for old time dances. He was also fond of sport and took a keen interest in any movement for file good of the district.
For several years he was gardener at Warreanga, Wye, for Mr. Robert T. Tunt.
Up till the time of his death he could entertain his many friends with stories of the early days of the district. He could remember the first rabbit in the district and for a time was employed by the late Mr. R. M. Gardiner, Mt. Schank, shooting the new pest on the estate. He also remembered the cutting of the road through Guyer's Hill, a few miles north of Port Mac Donnell, and which he used to say broke three contractors.
He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. His remains were interred in the Mt. Gabbier Cemetery on Sunday, November 4.
The Rev. Father Travers conducted the service at the grave, and Mr. Ern James carried out the funeral arrangements.
