• source. Jennie Morgan who wrote to say that his name was Samuel Charles Passau rather than Frederick Samuel so I have noted that change and changed it accordingly
She also added the following reference:
Also as per following records:
The following reference was found at the Sydney Society of Australian Genealogists:
Reference Title: Samuel Passau
SAG-Primary Records-File NO: 04/01/15856
Title: Hackney Cabs
Description: Sydney City Council list of Hackney Cab and Hackney Omnibus owners in Sydney as 31 December 1871 - Samuel Passau-Glebe Point Road-Omnibus Owner, Number 00105 (00=omnibus owner)
Note: 1871-Sydney Hackney Cab owners.

The following information is of a business registered in the Sands Directory's 1869 and 1871
Passau Samuel C - Glebe Road South side between Parramatta Road and Derby Place. There was a Wesleyan Church on the corner.
She also writes:
The research on Samuel Charles Passau has proved to be hard to follow up, as there are no records of a Samuel Charles Passau arriving in Australia about 1839-40 or of his marriage to Matilda Dawes. Samuel's son Frederick was born in 1841 but Samuel is not listed on the 1841 Census so it is possible that he was living in the home of his employer.

The ships log for the 'Orient' on which Matilda Dawes (wife of Samuel) arrived in 1839, has a record for Samuel Cusson, which some web sites have listed as Samuel Charles Passau. This is the only name similar to Samuel Charles Passau on the ship 'Orient'. However it is most unlikely to be Samuel Charles Passau as it says Samuel Cusson was a native of Cork, Ireland, and that he was a veterinary surgeon. On the Baptism Registration for Frederick Charles Passon (Passau), the Father is listed as Samuel & his profession as Servant. Also Samuel Passau's death certificate says he was born in London, which is what he must have told his son, Frederick who was the informant for the details on the death certificate. In addition, handwritten notes from a probable relative in New Zealand (Gordon Passau) written in 1986 indicate that Samuel Charles may be related to Arthur Henry Passau born 1835 in Kent, England (Southsea Portsmouth). The family names of the New Zealand Passau's are all similar to the family names chosen by Frederick Charles Passau.
The following information is of a business registered in the Sands Directory's 1869 and 1871:
Passau Samuel C - Glebe Road South side between Parramatta Road and Derby Place. There was a Wesleyan Church on the corner.

There is no record at the Lands Office, Macquarie St. Sydney of Samuel Charles Passau owning land in Glebe or anywhere else between 1825 to his death in 1881. However his son, Frederick purchased land in Glebe in 1871, which is where Samuel may have run his business.

By the 1860's Samuel and Matilda lived in the area where Samuel worked.
Their address is always around the Glebe area. Post office records and
Sands Directory's show that their son, Frederick also resided in that area.
In 1861, Samuel Passau was listed as living at Francis Street, Glebe and
again in 1863 20 he was again listed alphabetically at Francis Street, Glebe,
as well as under 'Glebe' in the suburban listings, as 'coachman, 9 Francis
Street'.

In 1876 the suburb of Glebe was separated from Sydney and Glebe Road is from Parramatta Road to Johnston Bay. Samuel Passau is no longer listed in the Sands Directory. However there is a Mrs Passau registered in the Sands Directory 1880 - Cleveland St Redfern. She lived between Walker St., Moorhead St., Young St., and Baptist Street on the south side. This is most likely 192 Cleveland St as recorded on Samuel's Death certificate.

• emigrated. Emigrated to Australia c1839 Death certificate says he died aged 63 and had been in NSW 42 years.

• Occupation. ominubus owner: Listed on Death Certificate as Coachman. The Sydney City Council list of Hackney Cab and Hackney Omnibus Owners in Sydney as at 31 Dec. 1871 includes "Samuel Passau-Glebe Point Road-Omnibus Owner, number 105.

• Resided. Bet. 1869 - 1871, Glebe Point Road, Glebe. Omnibus Proprietor.

Samuel married Matilda Dawes, daughter of Aaron Daws and Elizabeth Bannister, in 1839 in Sydney, NSW Australia. (Matilda Dawes was born on 5 Jun 1818 in Woodchurch, Ashford Borough, Kent England, christened on 1 Nov 1818 in Rye Wesleyan Church, East Sussex England, died on 17 Oct 1900 in 101 Reservoir St, Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW Australia and was buried on 18 Oct 1900 in Rookwood Cemetery, Lidcombe, Sydney, NSW Australia C of E Section.). The cause of her death was Natural Decay.

Noted events in their marriage were:

• source. Jennie Morgan [jennie.morgan@bigpond.com]who writes:
As of 27th July 2009 I have not been able to find any record of Matilda Dawes/Samuel Passau marriage. The family story is that they met and married on the ship 'Orient' on the way to Sydney. There is no record of the marriage in the ship log. The ship 'Orient' was 596 tons. It left London 14th November 1838 and arrived in Sydney on 4 April 1839. The Masters name was Douglas Wales. The ship touched at Cape of Good Hope and sailed on 9th February 1839, but no passengers came on board. There were 304 immigrants on board and 41 crew members. 7 Children died on the trip and 2 children were born. There were no bill of health issues.
Also listed on the log of the 'Orient' is Matilda's brother George Dawes aged 36, along with his wife, Louise, son George age 6, daughter Mary Ann, age 12, daughter Anne, aged 10, daughter Ellen, aged 8, daughters Kitty and Dennise, aged 4, and infant born 15 Nov 1838 the day after the ship left London. Other members of the family arrived the following year.
Matilda Passau (nee Dawes) death certificate says married in Sydney when she was aged 21 years. Her name is sighted on the Death Certificate of Charles Samuel Passau as being his wife and married in Sydney when he was aged 23 years. According to Matilda's Death Certificate Frederick Charles Passau was their only surviving child and there was a deceased female child (date born/died unknown).

Samuel Charles Passau death Certificate gives age at marriage as 23 years. This would make it 1841. It also says he had been in NSW 42 years which would make his arrival as 1839, the same year Matilda Dawes arrived on the ship 'Orient' as an unmarried female immigrant.
However there is no listing on the 'Orient' for Samuel Passau.
