Joseph Benjamin Dawson arrived on July 29, 1854, on the sailing vessel 'Araminta'. Joseph Benjamin Dawson aged 28 years then, was a Shepherd. His spouse, Eliza Jane (nee Chapman) Dawson, sometimes known as Eliza Jane, aged 27 years, was a Lace maker, and she was born at Great Bowerford, Bedfordshire. Eliza Jane was Church of England and she could read and write. Their son, Azor Chapman Dawson was aged 7 years when they left England. Sarah Dawson, aged 3 years died on the voyage to the New World of Australia. It must have been a tragedy, to not only loose a child on the voyage but to find out on their arrival, that his mother, Elizabeth Dawson, had died, four months earlier on their way to Australia. Elizabeth Dawson his mother died on 21st March 1854, when she was only 53 years old. Betsy DAWSON, died four months earlier, on 21st March 1854, aged 53 years.
When they arrived in Australia he was 28 years old and he continued his trade, which was that of a Shepherd.

Noted events in his life were:
