DEATH OF MR. E. HERD
The hand of Death has been particularly busy of late, removing from our midst many sterling old citizens, The latest to receive the call was Mr. Edward Herd, who died at his residence, Loftus-street, Garden Hill, Wollongong, on Sunday last. Seventy-one years of age the late Mr. Herd was born in Corrimal-st., Wollongong, and educated in a school situated where the old Town Hall now stands. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Herd, both being among the oldest residents of Wollongong. Forty-two years ago he married Miss Charlotte Carmichael, the issue of the union being three sons and two daughters \emdash Elsie (Mrs. Geo. Fishlock), Thelma (Mrs. Robert Randall), and Herbie, Albert and Norman. His wife and family survive him. A painter by trade, the late Mr. Herd did all work by contract, and always gave satisfaction. He was a foundation member of the P.A.F.S. and a trustee up till his death. Years ago he was a member of the Masonic Lodge. About two years ago he had the misfortune to break a leg as a result of a fall at his home, and since that time his health had not been at all good. 'Ted,' as he was familiarly known, was popular with a very large circle of friends. For a time he sat as alderman on the Wollongong Council. In conjunction with Mr. R. M. Krippner he officiated as local auditor for the Illawarra Mutual Building Society for about ten years. A straight-goer and a man of sterling character, the late Mr. Herd was a fine example to the community in which he lived, and this is reflected in the family of boys and girls who are left to mourn his loss. The remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery on Monday afternoon, the cortege being a very representative one. Cannon Goddard, in the absence of Rev. E. Walker, officiated at the graveside. Mr. T. Clowry also read the P.A.F.S. service. Misses C. and E. Herd, of Wollongong, are sisters of the deceased, while Mr. Harry Herd is a brother.

South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus (NSW: 1900 - 1954), Friday 23 January 1931, page 12.
