Sudden Death of an Old Resident
One of those sad events which from time to time throw a gloom over a whole community occurred here on Sunday evening. When the rumor first spread that Mr. Albert Meurant of the 'Advance Australia Hotel Osborne's Flat was dead there were few that could credit it; people appeared stunned by the intelligence: it seemed too sudden and startling altogether. However I am sorry to have tor record that upon making enquiries I soon discovered but too certain confirmation of the melancholy fact. From what I have been able to learn so far Mr. Meurant was suddenly seized with an apoplectic fit threatened perhaps which terminated fatally. Mr. Meurant was a very old resident amongst us and there are none, I believe who knew him but will feel a pang of sorrow at the dreadful fate that has overtaken him. He was a gentlemen who was highly respected and wasmuch esteemed both in his public and private capacities. I grieve to say that he has left a widow and large family, who feelings at the loss theyhave sustained surpass my powers of description though if anything is calculated to alleviate their distress it may be a mournful consolation to them to know that the utmost sympathy is displayed on all sides towards them for their melancholy bereavement. Mr. Meurant was I believe fifty years of age and is to be interred at the Yackandandah Cemetery on Tuesday (this day).

Mr. Meurant's funeral was largely attended on Tuesday last by the inhabitants of the neighbouring diggings and the town. Your informant
was wrong in some of the statements concerning his death. This sad event did not take place suddenly nor was its cause apoplexy but an inflammatory abdominal affection with which the deceased was taken ill a fortnight ago and under the influence of which he gradually sank.

Albert married Selina Diana Jarvis in 1842 in St Bartholomews C of E, Prospect, NSW Australia. (Selina Diana Jarvis was born on 13 Apr 1825 in Tenterden, Kent England and died in 1881 in Yackandandah, Victoria Australia.)
