Alexander Allan became a Writer to the Signet on 15th January 1819. He was apprenticed to George Robertson. He was the third son of William Allan, Merchant, Edinburgh. He died 1st February 1871 and was married. (Source: Her Majestys Signet, Edinburgh, 1890)

When Alexander married Rebecca, the following was recorded in the Glasgow Parochial Registers, which brings a few questions up - 18 Jan 1836, Alexander Allan, Stationer in Edinburgh, married Rebecca Lowell Fraser, residing in Glasgow.

The 1841 has Alexander and Rebecca, along with William, their son, at Gilmore Place, Edinburgh. He is a Writer.

The 1851Census shows Rebecca a widow and, apart from their son, William residing with her, also present was Alexina, daughter, born in Glasgow in 1831.

When Alexina married in 1868, she stated that her deceased father was a Writer. When Alexander died in 1871, his niece stated that he was single, as did the previous census in 1861. Having said that, the index of Writers to the Signet provides the following:

So, everything agrees, except his marital status and the mis-information in 1836.

He married Rebecca Lowell Fraser, 18 January 1836 in Glasgow, Scotland, born 1797 in India (daughter of Charles Lowell-Fraser [1760 - 1841] and Isabella Campbell [1766 - 1851]), census 31 March 1851 in Cottages, Dunbar, Haddingtonshire, died 31 July 1859 in Ashton Terrace, Gourock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, cause of death Cancer for many years.
